Background Details
Coffee was first introduced to Colombia in the mid 16th century.  The leaders of Colombia wanted landowners and farmers to grow coffee, but they were met with a lot of resistance. The people were worried about how they would survive while waiting for the coffee trees to produce their first crops. An idea was brought forth by a Catholic Priest, the thought suggested planting three or four coffee trees in place of the usual penance paid at confession. The idea was well-received by the Archbishop of Colombia, so he ordered everyone to use this as penance. This simple idea launched Colombia into the world's third-largest coffee producing country built on the penance of its forefathers. The rich volcanic soil in the arid mountains of Colombia produces ideal conditions for growing high-quality coffee. Annually, the country produces around 11.5 million bags of coffee, preceded only by Brazil and Vietnam. Coffee is the largest exported commodity for the country.
 
Our Colombian Offering
Colombia San Agustin comes from a selection of 35 small family-owned farms. The community came together seeing as they all share one main focus, which is quality coffee production. The community is actively working to improve coffee prices for its members, to establish direct trade relationships and to enable farmers to reinvest in their farms and provide for their families.
Our Colombia San Agustin is grown at high altitudes and tended to with great care. The coffee trees are intercropped with banana and rubber trees, so the coffee is grown in the shade.
